Lineage of Chögyam Trungpa

Chögyam Trunpa (1939-1987) is one of the most visionary and influential Tibetan lamas of the 20th century who brought Buddhism to the west. Born in Eastern Tibet, he was trained in the Kagyu and Nyingma practice lineages by three principal teachers — Jamgön Kongtrül of Sechen, Khenpo Gangshar, and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. After his escape from Tibet in 1959, he founded numerous meditation retreat centers throughout North America and Europe, including Drala Mountain Center in 1971.

Since then, we have been blessed by the presence of extraordinary Buddhist teachers including HH14th Dalai Lama, the 16th Karmapa, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, Jigme Phuntsok Rinpoche, Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, Pema Chodron, and many other lineage masters. Today, DMC core’s mission is to ensure that this legacy continues to live on this land, bringing benefit to our world for generations to come.

A Kind and Dignified Humanity

Witnessing the demise of his Tibetan culture and seeing the suffering of our modern world, Chögyam Trungpa went into a great period of self-reflection and meditation. He felt that if humanity were to succeed together, it would be based on global respect, dignity, and kindness for all.

In the 1970’s, he began to present a secular vision based on the ancient principles of Shambhala that proclaims the inherent goodness of all humanity. His teachings were compiled into his best-selling book, Shambhala: the Sacred Path of the Warrior, and many other writings, films and recordings.

Together with our Buddhist and other wisdom traditions, DMC continues the Shambhala secular teachings and practices for how to create enlightened society and a fearless embrace of life.
