The Art of Zen Birding
May 30–June 1, 2025
Four Seasons: Nature Retreats, Meditation & Mindfulness, On Land Retreats
There are birders and there are Zen birders. What’s the difference? Intention.
Join naturalist and Birding Man Adventures Founder Dr. Ryan Dibala in a series of workshops that explore what could be considered the paradoxical worlds of birding and Zen birding. The breeding birds of the montane and subalpine ecosystems surrounding Drala provide a plethora of unique examples that will serve as a foundation for learning the basics of birdwatching and birding by ear. Learn to differentiate bird species by sight and sound, understand their behavior and ecology, and incorporate modern tools and apps to take your birding to the next level.
While you may be inclined to start listing and traveling the world to find as many species as you can, consider the very different value of Zen or “mindful” birding. Explore meditation and mindfulness techniques that will deepen and enhance your connection to the natural world. Learn to set intentions that do not limit or disappoint you and develop birding habits that foster peace, fullness, gratitude, and connection to the natural world. Establish a newfound connection to birds by learning to make space for the mind, body, and spirit in each outing. This approach to birding will help you experience your world differently by cultivating a childlike wonder and curiosity while rejuvenating your sense of health and well-being.
We recommend bringing binoculars.
